9kg Gas Bottle

A 9kg gas bottle is considered the standard size BBQ gas bottle and is roughly equivalent to a 20lb propane tank. 9kg represents the nominal weight of the gas contents. A 9kg gas bottle weighs approximately 17.5 kg when full, light enough to be portable and transportable for a wide range of purposes.

To put the 9kg gas bottle into practical perspective, it will run a portable 2 burner gas cooker for around 15 hours with the gas turned up quite high. It will last even longer on lower settings or with only one burner being used. In other words, a 9kg gas cylinder can be used for all your cooking or BBQ needs and a whole lot more. Gas can be used for:

  • cooking
  • heating
  • lighting
  • hot water
  • refrigeration

A 9kg gas bottle can be a smart reserve cylinder if you use only one 45kg cylinder at home and need a fast temporary hook-up when the gas runs out. Both types of cylinders have the same connections, hose fittings and a gas regulators.

9kg Gas Bottles and LPG Gas Bottle Swap’n’Go Refill

9kg Gas Bottle Empty Weight

The 9kg gas bottle empty weight, or tare weight, is stamped on the neck ring of the bottle. The weight range of 9kg gas bottle empty is 7.8–10.4 kg. As there are many manufacturers of 9kg gas bottles, the empty weight and gas bottle dimensions vary significantly.

As the name suggests, our SWAP’n’GO program is all about swapping over your empty gas bottle with a full one, and off you go! No waiting around for someone to manually refill your gas bottle. You can swap your empty 9kg or 4kg gas bottle for a full one at one of our many thousands of dealers across Australia.

9kg Gas Bottle Full Weight

A 9kg gas bottle weighs approximately 16.3–19.0kg when full. The weight variation is in the empty 9kg gas bottle weight due to manufacturing variances. 9kg refers to the weight of the empty bottle only. LPG gas can be compressed significantly into a power-packed energy source, making 4kg and 9kg gas bottles extremely economical.

SWAP’n’GO Gas Bottles Refill Valve Types

There are two common BBQ-style gas bottle refill valve types.

1. The standard SWAP’n’GO gas bottle valve in Australia is a POL fitting valve.

2. There are also Camper Valves fitted to 4kg camper SWAP’n’GO propane gas bottles. Camper valves are for appliances designed for Camper valve use.

SWAP’n’GO complies with all Australian Standards for Caravan LPG Gas Bottles.

How Long Will a 9kg Gas Bottle Last

A 9kg gas bottle will last about 7 to 8 days cooking one main meal a day for one hour on a 4 burner grill. The 9kg gas bottle will naturally last longer when cooking with a small 2 burner compact BBQ. It will last even longer on lower settings or if only one burner is turned on.

What About Propane

Propane is the same as LPG gas, so the exchange you make will be the same thing with SWAP’n’GO gas bottles. You exchange (swap) your empty propane (LPG) gas bottle for a full BBQ LPG gas bottle refill, which you then own. Propane exchange can also refer to 45kg home LPG gas bottles, which are also exchanged when empty.

In the case of 45kg LPG gas bottles, the bottles are owned by Elgas, and you only pay for the gas used, plus a small annual contract fee.

Water Capacity of Gas Cylinder

The water capacity of gas cylinder is a figure that is mostly irrelevant for consumers. Engineers use it and as it suggests, the water capacity of gas cylinder is the capacity when filled with water. You can see the “W.C.” stamped into the neck ring of gas cylinders.

A good conversion rate to remember for cylinder capacity is that 1 kilogram is approximately equal to 1.96 litre of LPG.

Elgas Gas Bottle Size Chart

What is the typical life span of a gas bottle?

A 9kg gas bottle is extremely energy-efficient. One 9kg gas bottle is around enough to cook meals for a week using a multi-burner gas cooktop. Gas bottles are portable when secure or packed, and are perfect for when it’s time to hit the road for some time away camping or caravanning.

A 9kg LPG bottle will last for many backyard BBQs and can even provide powerful lighting when the sun goes down and it’s time to party. The choices are all yours regarding how to use LPG (propane) and Elgas is here to make it happen for you. For double or triple combo potential, simply purchase additional SWAP’n’GO gas bottles.

Here are some examples of the extra services we provide to our swap customers:

  • We collect the gas bottles from your local dealer and transport them back to our processing plant. The gas bottles are then washed to remove any dirt or BBQ grease.
  • We refurbish the gas bottles to ‘near new’ condition. Over 50% of the gas bottles are repainted before refilling. Gas bottles with heavy rust are cleaned down to the bare metal and then primed and repainted.
  • We accept out-of-date gas bottles at no extra charge. We check the inspection date on every gas bottle before filling. We only refill those with valid test dates.
  • If a gas bottle has reached its expiry, we perform all of the required inspections, refurbish it, put in a brand new valve and then apply a new date stamp.
  • We recycle thousands of gas bottles every year that do not meet our quality and safety standards. We also make them ‘safe’ for recycling by removing any traces of gas so that our recycling friends can stay safe, too.
  • SWAP’n’GO uses digital scales to ensure proper and safe filling based on weight. We set the scales for each individual gas bottle, based on its empty (tare) weight. This avoids dangerous overfilling or lost value through underfilling. With SWAP’n’GO, you know you are always getting what you pay for.
  • We perform two leak checks on each gas bottle. Our safety record is second to none. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our customers, employees and the community.
  • We cover the gas bottles with protective netting to help prevent scrapes and scratches during transport. A yellow quality assurance seal is also placed around the gas bottle collar so you know that the gas bottle was filled and safety checked by SWAP’n’GO.
  • We transport the gas bottles to and from our refurbishment and filling plants so that you get a ‘near new’, fully inspected, accurately filled and leak checked gas bottle ready to go, with no waiting.
How much gas is in a 9kg bottle?

A 9kg gas bottle weighs approximately 16.3–19.0kg when full. Propane gas is extremely light by nature, so you can imagine how much pressurised propane goes into filling a 9kg gas bottle. In fact, the amazing ability of LPG propane gas to be so densely pressurised is the reason gas can be cost-effectively produced and delivered to your door at the best possible price.

How long will a 4kg gas bottle last?

A 4kg gas bottle is a great SWAP’n’GO gas bottle alternative. If you are camping/backpacking and want something lighter to carry, this could be the solution. A 4kg gas bottle will provide plenty of gas to cook substantial meals for a couple of campers or caravanners for 2 or more days, and be on standby for gas light duty at night.

A 4kg gas bottle is the perfect outdoors companion for BBQ’s or holiday road trips. Simply pack your cylinder, connectors, and portable gas appliances along with your swags, tarps, mats, airbeds, sleeping bags, headlamps, gazebos or awnings, and you’re good to go. With more than 1,000 SWAP’n’GO locations around NSW, VIC, QLD and the rest of Australia, the holiday season is sorted!
